Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “değersiz sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine sargılanmasıyla oluşan gücük polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit lafıntısı ile öbürü arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok adetda polipeptit madun birimi çitndırır). Esas fark peptitlerin gücük, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi sırasında her amino asit, vesair amino asite kadimî, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle sargılanır. Polipeptid binasına sulplan amino asitlerin her biri binaya peptid sargılarıyla sargılanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir sutaş çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Averaj bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Malum en uzun polipeptit, ortalama 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda mevcut “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine sulplan amino asitlere lafıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki lafıntı, bağ yapmamış, hür amino grubu çitndırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin vesair ucundaki hür α-karboksil grubu olan lafıntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
